Historical overview of the arrival of the Gospel in Mexico

On January 6, 1924, a man of God from Northern Ireland named JOSEPH STEWART making a boat trip from that distant country, arrived at the port of Tampico Tamaulipas in the Mexican Republic with a great desire to fulfill the purpose of God when he said: Go into all the world, preach the gospel to every creature. The immigration authorities questioned him about the purpose of his trip. To which he replied: I COME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL.

Work that began immediately, first in some temples where it was allowed and in the houses whose inhabitants heard the voice of the gospel. There were many people who, upon hearing the message by our brother JOSEPH STEWART, understood and felt the call of God our Lord, the following Brothers J. Carmen Barrientos and his wife Francisca Segura are mentioned among the first believers; Juan Carreón Adame and his wife Joaquina Martínez; Victoriana Segura, Syria Segura and many more.

It was 2 years and 10 months that he dedicated to sowing the gospel of salvation in the Mexican Republic, in this space of time history narrates numerous events where the hand of God was manifested giving testimony in the nascent church.

Foreword

Having achieved with the help of God the publication of the first edition of the History of the Evangelical Christian Spiritual Church in 1992, today we present to the Christian people this second edition, corrected and enlarged.

The corrections have been made, above all, in the location of the birthplace of the Missionary Brother José Stewart, as well as in some data related to his family and his missionary trips. Regarding the above, mention should be made of the tireless research work carried out by our beloved brother Benjamín Hernández Arroyo; who, at the head of the Church History Commission, successfully managed to locate a good part of the family of the famous Irish missionary and along with it the precise data that are inserted in this volume; His dedication to this work and his persistence have borne fruit and have left a deep mark, imprinted not only on the data that are known today but also on the minds of those of us who knew him and lived with him. Do not be with us to witness this edition, as you left to be present with our Lord Jesus.

The historical information in this work has been increased up to the year 2000, thanks to the collaboration of the District Bishops and, in large part, to the existing documents in the archive of the General Directorate of our Holy Institution. We thank God first and then the H. Convention of Ministers of the Lord, the distinction that they have made us object to when they appoint us to the performance of this work; in the same way, to the General Manager for their support at all times for the realization of this project. We hope to have fulfilled, to the best of our ability and strength, what has been entrusted to us, sending God the Glory and Praise for this triumph. History is the record by selection of the events that happened in past times and in a chronological way, in such a way that it represents a way of access to the present, for the record of future actors.

The very presence of man in the infinite mind of the Creator is a fact that gives rise to an inexhaustible source of events.
Human endeavor has been the center of attention of historians of all time, actions that have not gone unnoticed in the eyes of God. When man channeling his actions to the good, the Sacred River of the deeds of God and his children is gathering flow.

This is how the History of those who, due to their influence, have resulted in the formation of a people that through the centuries serves the God of Heaven, believing by faith in the faithful testimony of those who wrote the magnificent deeds of Jesus the Christ. This is our contribution, as members of the wonderful body of Christ to this generation and to those that follow.

One came from there, from distant lands, bringing to our nation that accumulation of blessings that first satisfied the soul of those of Jerusalem, then that of those of Judea and later that of the Samaritans, reaching up to these terms that we have to inhabit.
Thus the history of the Church founded by Christ continues its course. It is then when our homeland trembles upon hearing the voice of the gospel of power, which makes consciences vibrate until it frees them from the works of death and already regenerated, impregnates them with the holiness of God.

The preaching of the Gospel of Christ by the missionary José Stewart from the year 1924, was accompanied by the testimony of Divine approval; proof of this is that, having elapsed time, it remains and increases every day: widening the tents, lengthening the ropes and fortifying the stakes; growing in all directions in accordance with the promises of God.

The story of what the Lord has done with his Church since ancient times and until now it is interesting to know it, if not in its entirety, then in the most relevant facts that are contained in this volume.

It is a reality that Stewart's presence in America was the beginning of the establishment of the Spiritual Christian Evangelical Church in Mexico, whose development God has witnessed with abundant manifestations of the Holy Spirit, giving us gifts from heaven and the living hope that vibrates in our hearts. for the faithfulness of his promises.
